Activity Description: ArchForKids Mission: Through engaging learning programs, ArchForKids spurs young people to explore how the built world around them affects who they are and how they live. As young tecture walks and construct skyscrapers and sustainable cities, they apply academic concepts to real world situations. In addition, they gain a deeper understanding – and appreciation – of their own communities and the wider world. Organizational background: ArchForKids was established in 2013 by architect/educator Janny Gedeon and arts administrator Kathryn Slocum. It is a leading provider of STEAM (science/tech/engineering/art + design /math) programs in the New York metro area. ArchForKids also provides a range of virtual programs to audiences across the country and world. Why architecture? Architecture surrounds us - it is relevant, easily accessible and tangible. Math, science, social studies and art/design are all embedded in the built world. Architecture is both an art and a highly technical field. Most kids like building things, feeling the accomplishment of problem-solving and creating something interesting, useful and beautiful. Architecture is a great medium for all kinds of learning and doing. Moreover, the built world can be used to support school curriculum and to make connections between schools, young people and the wider community. Involving children in design decisions about the places in which they live, learn and play can produce inspiring buildings that instill a sense of ownership and civic engagement. Our process: In ArchForKids offerings, young designers investigate, explore, measure, estimate, design, draw, calculate and construct. They go on neighborhood investigations, design parks and dream houses, propose uses for vacant lots, and much more. Our architect-educators teach core academic subjects through projects that deepen student understanding of the built world. Through this “hands-on, minds-on” approach to education, we encourage students to use design thinking and to become critical thinkers, creative makers and lifelong learners. ArchForKids programs are designed to: • Use the local community as a living classroom • Reach all styles of learners • Use the design process to solve problems and challenges • Sharpen STEAM content and knowledge • Introduce children to the tools and strategies used by architects and engineers • Extend/enrich school curricula and align with common core standards • Improve ELA skills through journal writing/sharing and presentation of work • Nurture knowledge and appreciation for the aesthetics, history and function of communities • Expose young people to potential careers related to the built environment Our programs and partners: ArchForKids programs include in-school residencies, afterschool studios, library and museum workshops, all-day design challenges and more. We work with schools in New York City and Westchester County. In addition, ArchForKids has ongoing partnerships with the Brooklyn, Queens, New York and Westchester Public Libraries; City of Mount Vernon Youth Bureau and Tarrytown Summer Arts Camp. ArchForKids has served as artists/educators in residence for the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NYC), the Hudson River Museum (Yonkers) and the High Line in Manhattan. ArchForKids works virtually with the nonprofit LEAD Coalition and the City of Panama City FL, leading charrettes in which teens re-imagine their community.
