NOTE: A sign reading DANGER -- PERMIT-REQUIRED CONFINED SPACE, DO NOT ENTER or using other similar language would satisfy the requirement for a sign. a) Worksite - On or about June 17, 2022, permit-required confined spaces, including but not limited to the drums, were not labeled as permit spaces. Periodically, employees open a hatch on the drum and add chemicals, check pH, remove skins, or (rarely) enter the drum to remove a knotted skin. Employees typically perform most work by using a stick to drag skins, or reaching in with their hands (and thus breaking the plane of the hatch opening).

For example, when an employee enters a drum to remove a knotted skin, there need to be documented procedures to deenergize and prevent the drum from turning.
