Citation text line Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to emergency egress hazards: a) Worksite at Green Empire Farms, Inc., on or about 6/18/20: Exit doors throughout the facility were not marked with signs such as, "Exit" and "Not An Exit", to indicate their purpose. b) Worksite at Green Empire Farms, Inc., on or about 6/18/20: Exit routes throughout the facility were not marked with signs to indicate the direction of travel to the nearest exit. c) Greenhouse #1 at Green Empire Farms, Inc., on or about 6/18/20: The employer did not ensure that a sufficient number of exit doors were provided for employees to quickly and safely exit the building in the event of fire or other emergency. This greenhouse is approximately 820 feet wide x 2,625 feet long and has zero personnel doors and one overhead door at the East end and one overhead door at the West end. d) Greenhouse #2 at Green Empire Farms, Inc., on or about 6/18/2020: The employer did not ensure that a sufficient number of exit doors were provided for employees to quickly and safely exit the building in the event of fire or other emergency. This greenhouse is approximately 820 feet wide x 2,625 feet long and has zero personnel doors and one overhead door at the East end and one overhead door at the West end. Among other feasible and acceptable means of abatement for instances a & b would be to install exit signs and directional exit signs in accordance with (NFPA) National Fire Protection Association Life Safety Code 101-2018, Chapter 7 Means of Egress, Section 7.10 Marking of Means of Egress. Another means of abatement would be to remove Fruitful Time employees from the worksite until the appropriate exit signage is provided. Among other feasible and acceptable means of abatement for instances c & d would be to install exits doors in numbers and design that meet the criteria outlined in (NFPA) National Fire Protection Association Life Safety Code 101-2018 including but not limited to: Chapter 7 Means of Egress, Section 7.4 - Number of Means of Egress; Chapter 40 - Industrial Occupancies, Section 40.2 Means of Egress Requirements and Tables 40.2.5.1 - Arrangement of Means of Egress and Table 40.2.6.1 - Maximum Travel Distance to Exits. Other abatement methods would be to remove contract employees from the worksite and hazard.
