I started my business because Shea is great for skin - it moisturizes and heals. I grew up with Shea and knew its amazing qualities. I produce a small range of products in my kitchen using Shea that I buy directly from women's groups in West Africa. The products include skin salves, lip balms, soap, and even a product for dogs. My business is about more than just making the best skincare products though - I started it also because Shea is an important source of economic empowerment for women in my home community in Togo, West Africa, and it is also an important part of the natural environment. When I sell my products they deliver benefits not only to my customers but also to women in West Africa and the natural environment. I arrived from Burkina Faso to the USA in 2002 and brought Shea with me - Shea trees grow only in West Africa, and are the source of Shea butter and Shea oil. In the USA, I made Shea lotions for my family and often gave some away as gifts to friends. They loved it and encouraged me to start making it to sell. I started selling it at our local farmer's market, where it was also popular, and I started supplying two local boutiques. I use 100% all-natural Shea butter and Shea oil, which I have selected myself on visits to Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Togo. I know who makes it and how they make it - women's groups in villages I have visited. I add essential oils to give the Shea products added benefits for skin. In 2018, I launched my website and I sell products there, too, all across the USA. That was the same year I also became a US Citizen! I became an entrepreneur in order to earn a living doing something I love - making Shea products. I have since learned more and more about natural skin care products, attending various workshops and seminars. Shea provides and share this knowledge with my customers. The majority of my loyal customers live in the East Village of New York City. I participate in many local bazaars and street fairs. I have also participated in fundraising events for my local public schools, where my children went to school. I have annually provided free products as part of what I call "Teacher Appre-shea-tion Day." I have also worked with my local State Assembly Member Harvey Epstein to donate products to health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am active in a variety of local initiatives to improve the parks, the community gardens, the schools, and our local businesses. Globally, my products contribute to a better world: women are empowered when people buy my products because I pay a sustainable price for the shea I use. Buying my products also helps protect Shea trees, which are good for the environment. |
