THE PRECISION SUBSAMPLING SYSTEM (PSS) PROJECT SEEKS TO DEVELOP A CAPABILITY TO CONDUCT SCIENTIFIC ANALYSES ON FINE SPATIAL SCALES OF SAMPLES ON A FUTURE IN SITU MARS MISSION, SUCH AS THE ASTROBIOLOGY FIELD LABORATORY (AFL), MARS PROSPECTOR ROVERS (MPR), OR MARS SAMPLE RETURN (MSR). AS PROPOSED, THE PSS COMPRISES INSTRUMENTATION THAT OBTAINS PARTICULATE SAMPLE FROM LOCALIZED REGIONS ON A SOLID SAMPLE VIA FINE-SCALE DRILLING OR MILLING. THE SAMPLE THUS OBTAINED IS COLLECTED ON A TRANSPORT MECHANISM, SUCH AS A FLEXIBLE TAPE SUBSTRATE, THAT SERVES TO SUPPORT FURTHER SAMPLE ANALYSIS BOTH AT MARS AMBIENT CONDITIONS AS WELL AS UNDER HIGH VACUUM (E.G., MASS SPECTROMETRY). IN THE LATTER CASE THE TAPE MAY SERVE AS A VACUUM GASKET TO ELIMINATE THE REQUIREMENT OF SAMPLE TRANSFER. THE PSS ADDITIONALLY MAY ALLOW STORAGE OF OBTAINED SUBSAMPLES FOR EVENTUAL RETURN TO EARTH. DURING EACH STEP OF PSS OPERATION, ANALYTICAL IN SITU INSTRUMENTS MAY BE USED TO EXAMINE THE SAMPLE AT ITS VARIOUS POSITIONS. THE PSS PROJECT IS A COLLABORATION EFFORT IN WHICH HONEYBEE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ANALYSIS, DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, TEST, AND OPTIMIZATION OF VARIOUS FUNCTIONS AND SUBSYSTEMS OF THE PSS, WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF DELIVERING AND DEMONSTRATING AN END-TO-END PSS THAT OPERATES IN MARS AMBIENT CONDITIONS AND IS CATEGORIZED AS TECHNOLOGY READINESS LEVEL (TRL) 6, APPROPRIATE FOR FLIGHT DEVELOPMENT. THE FOCUS OF EFFORT AT HONEYBEE WILL BE THE DEVELOPMENT AND MARS ENVIRONMENTAL TESTING THE PSS HARDWARE. AT APPROPRIATE POINTS IN THE PROJECT, THIS HARDWARE WILL BE DELIVERED TO GSFC FOR INTEGRATION IN A TESTBED THAT INCLUDES PROTOTYPE ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTATION, WHICH WILL BE USED TO DEFINE AND ANALYZE THE SCIENTIFIC BENEFITS OF PSS AND FEED BACK TO HONEYBEE FOR OPTIMIZATION. |

THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSED EFFORT IS TO DEVELOP, VIA TESTING IN A SIMULATED MARS ENVIRONMENT, A BREADBOARD ONE-METER DRILLING SYSTEM FOR SUBSURFACE ACCESS ON MARS. ONCE DEVELOPED, THE DRILL COULD ALSO BE MODIFIED FOR RESEARCH ON OTHER SOLAR SYSTEM BODIES, SUCH AS THE MOON, COMET, EUROPA, AND NEAR EARTH OBJECTS. THIS IS A COMPONENT TECHNOLOGY EFFORT THAT INCLUDES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DRILL HEAD AND A LOW COST ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMBER TO SUPPORT THE ITERATIVE DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION OF AUGERS AND DRILL BITS UNDER MARS CONDITIONS. |

THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROPOSED EFFORT IS TO DEVELOP TO TRL 6 AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM FOR THE METERING AND DISTRIBUTION OF IN-SITU PROCESSED CONSOLIDATED AND UNCONSOLIDATED MARTIAN ROCK AND REGOLITH SAMPLES. THIS IS AN INNOVATIVE SAMPLE PREPARATION SYSTEM FOR A BROAD SPECTRUM OF INSTRUMENT TYPES OF VALUE TO FUTURE IN-SITU MARS MISSIONS. IT WILL SERVE AS A CENTRAL, INTEGRATED STATION OF A MISSION PAYLOAD FOR PERFORMING SUCH FUNCTIONS THAT MAY OTHERWISE NEED TO BE PERFORMED AS ADDITIONAL SUBSYSTEMS ON MULTIPLE INSTRUMENTS. THIS REDUCES THE COMPLEXITY, MASS, POWER, AND COST BURDEN ASSOCIATED WITH REQUIRING THIS FUNCTIONALITY AS PART OF EACH INSTRUMENT OR IMPOSING IT ON OTHER PAYLOAD FACILITIES, AND THUS REPRESENTS A MAJOR ADVANTAGE TO PAYLOAD MANAGEMENT. THIS SYSTEM WILL HEAVILY LEVERAGE OUR EXPERIENCE WITH ROBOTIC SAMPLE HANDLING. THE {PRECISION SAMPLE METERING AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM (PSMDS) WILL DIRECTLY ADDRESS THE SCIENCE OBJECTIVES OF FUTURE MARS MISSIONS, NAMELY ASTROBIOLOGY FIELD LABORATORY AND MARA SAMPLE RETURN, BY PROVIDING SAMPLE ALIQUOT AND DISTRIBUTION CAPABILITY IN SUPPORT OF MORPHOLOGICAL OBSERVATION AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS. IT MAY ALSO BE OF BENEFIT TO MID-ROVERS AND SCOUT MISSIONS THAT REQUIRE IN-SITU SAMPLE ANALYSIS. THIS WILL ENHANCE SCIENCE PAYLOADS BY PROVIDING THE CENTRALIZED CAPABILITY TO: 1) ACCEPT A RANGE OF SAMPLE TYPES FROM DIFFERENT SAMPLE ACQUISITION DEVICES, 2) PRESENT THOSE SAMPLES TO A RANGE OF SAMPLE PROCESSING DEVICES, 3) ACCURATELY DISTRIBUTE PROCESSED SAMPLES TO A RANGE OF SCIENCE INSTRUMENTS DISTRIBUTED ACROSS A ROVER OR LANDER DECK, 4) CONTROL THE VOLUME OF SAMPLE MATERIAL DISTRIBUTED, AND 5) PORTION OUT A SINGLE SAMPLE AMONG MULTIPLE INSTRUMENTS |

EXPLORATION SYSTEMS MISSION DIRECTORATE LUNAR SURFACE SYSTEMS CONCEPTS STUDY THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION (NASA) IS CURRENTLY STUDYING LUNAR OUTPOST ARCHITECTURE CONCEPTS, INCLUDING HABITATION, MOBILITY AND COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, TO SUPPORT U.S. LUNAR EXPLORATION AND SCIENCE OBJECTIVES. NASA IS IN THE PROCESS OF DEFINING FUNCTIONAL CAPABILITIES AND CONCEPTS FOR ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS TO PROVIDE CORE CAPABILITIES. DESCRIPTION OF STUDY AREAS ALTERNATIVE PACKAGING OPTIONS OBJECTIVE THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY IS TO PRODUCE ALTERNATIVE PACKING OPTIONS THAT ELIMINATE OR MINIMIZE WASTE GENERATION FROM PACKING MATERIALS AND ALLOW OPTIMAL UTILIZATION OF AVAILABLE STOWAGE VOLUME. POTENTIAL ALTERNATIVES CAN INCLUDE CONCEPTS THAT DO NOT REQUIRE PACKING MATERIAL AT ALL OR THAT EMPLOY PACKING MATERIALS THAT HAVE SECONDARY USES. A THIRD, BUT LESS DESIRABLE, APPROACH WOULD BE PACKING MATERIALS WHOSE VOLUME IS REDUCED FOLLOWING USE BUT WHICH STILL BECOME WASTE. ALL OPTIONS MUST SATISFY APPLICABLE REQUIREMENTS FOR INITIAL PACKING FUNCTION, MUST STRIVE TO MINIMIZE THE MASS OF THE PACKING MATERIALS, AND MUST COMPLY WITH OTHER SPACEFLIGHT REQUIREMENTS SUCH AS FLAMMABILITY AND OFFGASSING. AN ADDITIONAL GOAL IS THAT THE MASS OF PACKING MATERIAL NOT EXCEED THE MASS OF THE ITEM, OR ITEMS, BEING PACKED. BACKGROUND HISTORICALLY, PACKING MATERIALS HAVE BEEN EMPLOYED TO PROTECT STOWABLE HARDWARE ITEMS DURING ASCENT FROM THE AMBIENT VIBROACOUSTIC ENVIRONMENT. EXAMPLES OF ITEMS THAT ARE PACKED IN THIS WAY INCLUDE SPARE SPACECRAFT HARDWARE COMPONENTS, TOOLS, SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS, FOOD AND PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT. THESE PACKING MATERIALS OCCUPY A SIGNIFICANT FRACTION OF THE AVAILABLE STOWAGE VOLUME. ADDITIONALLY, THESE PACKING MATERIALS ACCOUNT FOR A VERY SUBSTANTIAL PROPORTION OF THE WASTE STREAM THAT EVOLVES DURING A MISSION AS THE STOWED ITEMS ARE UTILIZED AND THE PACKING MATERIAL NO LONGER SERVES A PURPOSE. THE END RESULT IS CONSUMPTION OF STOWAGE VOLUME BY MATERIAL THAT ENDS UP AS WASTE. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS TOPIC-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS TO BE ADDRESSED IN THE ORAL AND WRITTEN CONTRACT DELIVERABLES, SPECIFIED IN PARAGRAPH 8 OF SECTION IX, INCLUDE: 1. DEFINING THE PROPOSED ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS 2. ADDRESSING COMPLIANCE WITH FUNCTIONAL AND COMPATIBILITY REQUIREMENTS 3. DEFINING THE UNIT MASS OF PROPOSED MATERIALS, AND 4. DEFINING SECONDARY USES OF MATERIALS, AS APPLICABLE. MINIMUM FUNCTIONALITY HABITATION ELEMENT OBJECTIVE THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY IS TO PRODUCE A CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR A MINIMUM FUNCTIONALITY HABITATION ELEMENT BASED ON A MINIMUM SET OF FUNCTIONS THAT ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE REFERENCE MISSION. THE MINIMUM FUNCTIONALITY HABITATION ELEMENT INCLUDES BASIC REQUIRED SAFETY FEATURES BUT DOES NOT PROTECT FOR CONTINGENCY SITUATIONS. |
